The ‘Late Show’ in Sophia Kokosalaki

POSING outside the Ed Sullivan theatre in New York City before her appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, Jada Pinkett-Smith looked stunning in a white and silver Sophia Kokosalaki Spring 2010 dress.

The bubble hem stands out against her athletic figure and her buttery skin. She accessorised with Pierre Hardy metallic trim platform sandals and matching circle drop earrings.

The actress was there to talk about her new TNT show Hawthorne as well as discuss her nude cover for Essence magazine, which she said she did for Willow to demonstrate empowerment and positive self image.

With a mother like Jada, I don’t think Willow has to ever worry about that…

Celebrity Style The high-waisted shorts

Lately, Ashanti has had a penchant for outfits that are totally unflattering, and also appear to be a size or two too small. But this week, she classed it up with a summery, white eyelet sundress that actually fit!

Ashanti

The full skirt is much more flattering than the high-waisted shorts and skinny jeans we've seen on her before. And she came through with some not-too-bad makeup and hair, too! It's still a little busty, and we're not too sure about the accessories, but it's a step in the right direction. We applaud a turn-around performance, and we hope the trend continues!

However, at the Days of Thunder Country Musical Festival, previous offenders Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson continued to let us down. After this orange-ruffles-gone-wrong top at the CMA Awards, Underwood made another mistake with this black one-piece.

Carrie_underwood

Even though it is a stage outfit, we still take issue with a satin jumpsuit. It also doesn't seem to fit quite properly and looks unfinished without a belt in those belt-loops. Also, thigh high boots outdoors during the dog days of summer? You'd have to be crazy! Well, at least they provide a place to put her microphone battery pack...?

Next comes Simpson. Even though she's been flying somewhat under the radar lately, remember these busty catastrophes? Now, trying to reinvent herself as a country star, she's taking on the bad sartorial habits of that set. Namely, cutoff jean shorts.

Jessica_simpson

It's like she dressed her former part of Daisy Duke to convince country fans that she really is a country singer! New flash: country musicians do not have to dress like caricatures of... country musicians. Then, Simpson changed outfits her shirt for her nighttime performance.

J_simpson

It almost makes us miss the plaid shirt. And those nude boots are just unjustifiable, no matter how great your legs are.

Christina Hendricks blossomed

IF there was any dress to contain those infamous bazookas, this would be it!

Mad Men‘s Christina Hendricks blossomed on the red carpet at the 62nd Emmy Awards in a wasp-waisted Zac Posen gown, featuring feathered sleeves and train, in a lovely lilac shade.

Christina told Us Magazine: “[The dress] reminded me of Ginger Rogers and Old Hollywood. I just fell in love with it.”

Talking about her curvy figure and now-famous assets, the actress, who plays sexy office manager Joan Holloway, said: “It’s such a compliment because all those times I had agents who were like, ‘You have to lose some weight,’ and all of a sudden, people are celebrating it.”

Jewel graced the red carpet

SINGER Jewel graced the red carpet at the 2010 Emmy Awards looking like a goddess, wearing a blush tiered lace gown by Zuhair Murad, accessoried with a satin-pleat clutch in a complimentary hue, chunky stone drop earrings and sexy red lips.

Later in the night, she took the stage in a subdued, pale blue gown to sing a never-recorded song “The Shape of You” for the ‘In Memorium’ section of the night. The song was originally written about a friend who passed away from cancer, but complimented the tribute perfectly.

The singer was a crowd-pleaser in both dresses but we’re loving the angelic aura she projected on the red carpet.

Eye-catching in Isabel Marant

NEWLYWED Megan Fox stopped by the 2010 Teen Choice Awards in a runway-worthy ensemble that showed off the best of her features.

The blue and white print top and metallic tulip skirt, both by Isabel Marant, did well to frame her gorgeous bare legs and fresh face. Add to that platform, peep-toe Louboutins and bold pewter accessories and Megan is a picture of perfection.

Jealous, us? Never!

LADY Gaga

LADY Gaga made headlines once again for her sartorial choices—this time she wears next to nothing, bar nipple stickers, a mesh ensemble and big panties.

She was photographed at the weekend’s Lollapalooza festival, capping off her Chicago performances with an enthusiastic body-surfing session with her fellow performers.

Who needs clothes when you have a few cute lion cubs at your disposal?

The fuzzy felines are all that a nude Julianne Moore is wearing (give or take a few luxury baubles and strategically placed handbags) in the new Autumn/Winter 2010 campaign for Bulgari.

Moore, who, may we remind you, is 49 freaking years old, shows off her animal instincts in her second campaign for the brand, dubbed "Eccentric Charisma" and shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Bulgari's Leoni handbags, Serpente pink gold watch, and glittering pieces from its High Jewelry Collection complement the actress's Discovery Channel style perfectly.

We don't know what's braver... posing in the buff or cuddling with lions. Color us impressed, girl.

Miranda Kerr - Model Style

Although she is one of the worlds busiest and most sought after models, Miranda Kerr tries hard to lead a low-key lifestyle when she’s not on a shoot. Unfortunately for her, no matter how hard she tries, her natural Australian beauty and sweet smile shine through, making it very hard for her to go unnoticed.

Although Miranda made her modeling debut in Australia’s Dolly Magazine back in 1997, she did not pursue her international modeling career until 2003, when she moved to Paris and then New York. Since then, she has appeared in campaigns for Betsey Johnson and Roberto Cavalli. Most famously, in 2007, she replaced Gisele Bündchen and became the first ever Australian Victoria’s Secret Angel.

Now a household name, Miranda is as famous for her look as she is for her intelligence and girl-next-door nature.

It’s probably no coincidence that Miranda, a practicing Buddhist, has a minimalist style, from her beauty secrets down to her fashion sense. When it comes to beauty, Miranda swears by drinking hot water with lemon every morning to flush out toxins. As for fashion, she depends on the maxi dress! Our model of the month makes it sound so easy!

Model Style: Miranda Kerr

While the European models generally go for classic black outfits, Miranda’s everyday style is typically Australian; beachy, breezy and ready-to-go. In almost every piece that she wears, there’s a casual and down-to-earth element. Whether it’s a cotton sundress paired with jeweled sandals and dark sunglasses, or a pair of skinny jeans with a chic blazer and killer heels, Miranda prefers to keep it fresh and simple.

When it comes to dresses, Miranda opts for longer lengths. A huge proponent of the maxi dress, she manages to pull it off in both spring and fall. For the warmer months, we like Mara Hoffman’s India Long Dress ($319, 50% off) and Charlotte Russe’s Mosaic Paisley Maxi Dress ($14.99), worn with a simple pair of flip flops.

For fall, try this James Perse V Neck Long Dress ($155), paired with Topshop’s Small Woven Leopard Scarf ($32) and AE’s Leather Moto Jacket ($250), for a look Miranda would love.

Not quite a maxi dress, another favorite dress style of Miranda’s is the cotton sundress (see far right). This V Neck Sundress ($172) by Only Hearts will give you a similar look, especially when paired with the Rufus Flat Jeweled Sandal ($32.42) by Nine West or the Keira Jeweled Sandal ($74.22) by Charles David.

Though Miranda might prefer the ease of throwing on a maxi dress, we can’t help but notice that she is just as adept at styling a pair of jeans. With legs as long as hers, it’s no surprise that she usually opts for a pair of skinnies, either in blue or black. As an Australian, we’re sure she has an affinity for Sass & Bide. We like their Did It For The Club ($220) jeans.

With Miranda, where there’s skinny jeans, there’s usually a blazer. For a similar look, try Silence & Noise’s Open Front Blazer ($78) in teal or wine.

Finally, as any Australian knows, adapting to an actual winter in New York can be hard. Miranda’s winter essentials? A khaki jacket like Charlotte Ronson’s Army Twill Jacket ($290), a super soft scarf like Forever21′s Puckered Crochet Scarf ($7.80) and a knit beanie like Topshop’s Lurex Two Tone Beanie Hat ($24).

On another note, if you’re as inspired by Miranda’s style as we are, you’ll love this piece of news. Yesterday, Miranda announced the launch of her new organic skincare line, KORA. Right now, it’s only available in Australia but we’ll keep you posted on other countries.

Alessandra Ambrosio - Model Style

While Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio might be best known for wearing very little – she is, after all, a Victoria’s Secret Angel – it is her fully clad, off-duty style that we have come to know and love. As a mother and jet-setting model to boot, Alessandra clearly knows the importance of dressing comfortably. Rarely, however, does she let this get in the way of her fervor for fashion. Whether it is skinny jeans and a slouchy sweater for a shopping session, or a laidback bohemian ensemble at Coachella, she always manages to balance simplicity with style. It is this carefree approach that made Alessandra the stand-out candidate for this month’s edition of Model Style.

As early as the age of twelve, Alessandra knew she wanted to be a model. After winning Brazil’s Elite Model Look competition, she quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the world’s best-known faces. She has appeared on the cover of a myriad of influential magazines and has walked the catwalks for designers such as Prada, Christian Lacroix and Giorgio Armani. Her most famed role, however, is as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, a position that quickly brought her to the attention of the public. Considering her place on the fashion map, it is no wonder that our sunkissed starlet knows a thing or two about style!

As you might imagine, Alessandra’s dual roles as mother and model don’t offer a lot of downtime. For a quick shopping break in New York City last month (far left), Alessandra selected an understated ensemble that, while stylish, was simple in its design. Though a great pair of skinny jeans and a slouchy sweater are practical pieces (the go-to garments for any woman’s off-duty day), her selection was spiced up with two austere accessories: a colorful scarf and a must-have pair of suede wedges. For a similarly stylish ensemble, we like Old Navy’s Lightweight Boyfriend Sweater ($24.50) paired with Ksubi’s High-Rise Ankle-Zip Skinny Jeans ($200). To finish off your outfit, add Dolce Vita’s Manny Open Toe Suede Pumps ($180) and this Ombre Gauze Oblong Scarf ($9.99) by Staring At Stars.

Of course, even when Alessandra translates her off-duty style into a simple look for summer, she still manages to stand out from the crowd (second from left). Her denim shorts and loose tee are given a chic boost with a long nautical-striped cardigan and metallic ballet flats. For a similarly low-key look, try 525 America’s Open Striped Cardi ($106) over William Rast’s Scarlet Cuffed Shorts ($165) and a simple tee. Finish it off with Gap’s Leather Ballet Flat ($39.50).

Although we are more than partial to our model muse’s informal attire, we can’t ignore her panache for party dressing. At the New York premiere of The Runaways (middle), Alessandra layered a slinky black mini dress under a cropped motorcycle jacket and then threw on a pair of gladiator-style heels. For your own party-perfect look, we like Kova & T’s Lace & Silk Mini Dress ($365) and Black Halo’s Kendall Mini Dress ($385). Pair your dress with Asos PU’s Biker Jacket ($37.20) and Vera Wang Lavender Label’s Heidi Shield Platform Sandals ($295).

While Alessandra’s regularly opts for a low-key luster, she is perfectly at home flying the bohemian flag. Her April outing to California’s Coachella music festival (second from right) was the perfect occasion for a hippie-chic ensemble, complete with beaded earrings, a fringe tunic and battered Frye boots. Start your look off with this Banana Leaf Cover Up ($195) by Eternal Sunshine Creations and a pair of Frye’s Shirley Riding Boots ($387.95). Accessorize your look with Free People’s Janis Brimmed Hat ($68) and Jacquie Aiche’s Blue Diamond Square Navajo Earrings ($151.80).

Before we close, we must pay homage to the jet-setting ways of the model crowd with an effortless example of airport chic. For a recent flight (far right), Alessandra stayed comfortable in a chunky knit sweater and loose jeans. A rugged pair of slip-on boots and a leather jacket gave the outfit a stylish edge. Try Mango’s Slouchy Cowl Neck Knit Top ($30.44) and 7 For All Mankind’s Roxanne Jeans ($178) to start. Cozy up in DV by Dolce Vita’s Travis Boots ($114.71) and Rezrekshn’s Leather Buckle-Front Motorcycle Jacket ($198).

Jessica Hart - Model Style

To say that Australian model Jessica Hart is gorgeous is an understatement—just look at her long legs, signature sweet gap-toothed smile and bright eyes—but here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we’re prepared to look past her superior beauty and focus on one thing only: her style. In fact, it’s fair to say that ever since we spotted Jessica on MTV’s The City, we’ve been, well, smitten. Her expressive mix of grunge and glamour, feminine and masculine, understated and yet perfectly put-together, has had us admiring from afar ever since she graced our television screen. In other words: we simply couldn’t look past Jessica for our latest edition of Model Style.

But first, as always, let us give a little background on today’s model muse. Jessica—who was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia—was discovered after entering and winning a modeling competition at the age of fifteen. A few years later, after stints in Paris and Tokyo, Jessica moved to New York City and quickly became one of the modeling world’s rising stars. Since moving, she has appeared on the cover of Vogue Australia and Elle Germany, walked the runways for Betsey Johnson and Agent Provocateur, and modeled for Guess, H&M, Moschino and Victoria’s Secret, among others. With that, it is time to salute Jessica’s natural beauty and flair for fashion in today’s edition of Model Style—sit back, relax and enjoy with five of Jessica’s best ensembles!

Model Style: Jessica Hart

In her downtime, Jessica clearly prefers flat shoes and low-key pieces, but that doesn’t mean she can’t pull of heels and party pieces with aplomb, as this confidently cool ensemble illustrates. In fact, this strapless little black dress, which Jessica wore to a benefit in East Hampton (far left), is one of our favorite off-duty looks, thanks to its ease and effortlessness—two major perks of party dressing! For a similarly stylish ensemble, start out with a playful black party dress—we like Karen Millen’s Feminine Flirtatious Strapless Ruffle Dress ($303.30) and ASOS’s Ruffle Hem Cocktail Dress ($30.33). Then, simply add a pair of metallic platforms, such as Roberto Cavalli’s Leather Platforms ($535.37), and an oversized pendant necklace like Yochi’s Large Silver Coin Necklace ($75).

Like many models, Jessica has a weakness for vintage band t-shirts, a passion she quells by scouring sites like eBay. Spotted last month on the streets of New York (second from left), Jessica demonstrated the art of wearing her fashion item du jour—the band tee—by pairing it with bright American Apparel shorts, a cute fedora and Doc Marten boots. We love the way she gives her rocker-chic ensemble a playful twist by adding a bright color—all in all, this outfit is cute, casual and definitely accessible. To give this ensemble a try, you simply must start with WGACA Vintage’s Vintage Ripped Rock Band Tees ($125 each) and a pair of Vintage Doc Martens ($128) from Free People. To give your outfit a modern twist, add American Apparel’s Stretch Bull Denim High-Waist Cuff Shorts ($46) and Staring At Stars’ Nubby Fedora ($28).

Jessica is a self-confessed lover of quirky hats—”They just add that extra touch,” she once told Vogue Australia—and, as such, she is always willing to throw on a bowler, fedora or Akubra wide-brimmed hat to elevate her look from uncomplicated to cool. Case in point: in June, Jessica was spotted in SoHo (middle) wearing an unfussy, 90s-inspired look—floral bodycon dress, studded Converse sneakers, felt fedora and a cross-body bag embellished with fringe. To replicate Jessica’s ultra-hip look, try a form-fitting printed dress like Motel’s Cloud Belinda Dress ($70) or Floral Hook & Eye Bodycon Dress ($58.98). Then, just add Converse’s Heat Seal Low Tops ($29.95) and JJ Winters’ Fringe Chain Bag ($460).

Although Jessica considers herself a “jeans and t-shirt kind of girl,” we’re fairly sure that she’s always, no matter what she wears, one of the most stylish girls in the room. This particular ensemble, which Jessica wore in May to the first anniversary presentation of Music Unites in New York City (second from right), is proof positive. Her leather pants and band t-shirt—this time, an ode to her boyfriend’s band, Tamarama—were modest, edgy and oh-so-suitable for the model girlfriend of a rocker. To assemble an equally rock & roll ensemble, layer Buddhist Punk’s AC/DC Cotton T-Shirt ($65) over a pair of leather skinnies—we like Mackage’s Stretch Leather Pants ($685) and Muubaa’s Zip Detail Leather Trousers ($126.38). Finish off your look with Alexander Wang’s Anya Wrapped Boot ($413).

Last, but certainly not least, we must draw attention to this cleverly composed fusion of feminine and masculine pieces. Namely, a little black dress and her worn-in pair of Doc Marten boots, which she wore in July while out and about in New York City (far right). The bonus with an outfit like this? The form-fitting dress is versatile enough to be worn with rugged boots, but would also look killer with a pair of heels. The choice is yours! For a similarly flexible get-up, try pairing Vero Moda’s Drape Front Jersey Dress ($23.59) with Vintage Doc Martens. Add Free People’s Fray Leather Obi Belt ($49.95) and Red By Marc Ecko’s Rounded Drawstring Pouch ($50.99) to complete the look.

Please note that this post may contain one or more sponsored links. If you happen to shop using these links, Mama’s A Rolling Stone will receive a commission from the store.

Sasha Pivovarova - Model Style

Model Style: Sasha Pivovarova

As well-versed fashion fans, you know that there are a slew of stylish models in the industry—from Danish beauty Freja Beha Erichsen to eccentric Aussie Abbey Lee Kershaw—and for that reason, it can be hard to pick between the assortment of model muses for our regular Model Style story. In spite of this, we always know a stylish subject when we see one and this month we are simply smitten with Russian stand-out Sasha Pivovarova. What is it about Sasha’s style that makes her so muse-worthy? The list is endless—her flawless skin, her doll-like eyes, her penchant for mixing playful pieces with high-end designer looks. To sum up, there is nothing about Sasha we don’t love, making her the clear choice for our latest edition of Model Style.

But first, as always, let us give a little background on today’s model muse. Sasha—who was born and raised in Moscow, Russia—was discovered when friend, photographer and now-husband Igor Vishnyakov submitted photos of her to international modeling agency IMG. Sasha was quickly snapped up by IMG and the rest, as they say, is history. Sasha made her runway debut at Prada’s Fall 2005 show, and has since walked for such industry heavyweights as Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Rodarte. Her instantly identifiable face has been seen on the cover of US Vogue, Vogue Italia, French Vogue, British Vogue and Vogue Nippon. Plus, she has served, at one point or another, as the face of Prada, Giorgio Armani, and Longchamp. Oh, did we mention that Sasha is the unofficial muse of Miucca Prada? As one of the most well-known and successful models in the fashion world, it is no surprise that our model muse knows a thing or two about style!

In her off-duty hours, Sasha clearly prefers to dress in comfortable pieces with a modern, must-have twist. Case in point: this heather-gray Rick Owens Dress ($560), which she paired with a luxe black fur coat and peep-toe ankle boots. Happily, maxi dresses and faux fur accents are one of fall’s biggest trends and, as such, there are plenty of similarly stylish pieces in stores now. We suggest starting out with Warehouse’s 3/4 Sleeve Maxi Dress ($47.18) or T By Alexander Wang’s Fitted Long Sleeve Maxi Dress ($145)—both can transition easily from summer to winter. As the days get colder, throw on a cropped faux fur coat, such as Halston Heritage’s Faux Goat Short Fur Coat ($445) or Manoush’s Faux Fur Jacket ($205.57). For the finishing touch, add a pair of Aldos’ Tyms Zip Detail Ankle Boots ($168.50).

Although it is a well-known fact that the best model style-spotting takes place at the Tuileries during Paris Fashion Week—after all, this is where street style stars are born!—we were particularly thrilled to spot this bohemian-luxe ensemble on Sasha. Her rainbow Missoni dress looks effortless, especially when layered under a black cardigan and fur vest, and paired with tan ankle boots. For a similarly stylish ensemble, start out with a colorful maxi dress—we like Missoni’s Camargue Lurux-Knit Maxi Dress ($1,110), obviously, and Traffic People’s Ethnic Wave Print Silk Maxi Dress ($58.98). Complete the look with J Crew’s Dream Shawl-Collar Cardigan ($88) and 7 For All Mankind’s Fur Vest ($565), and then throw on a pair of ASOS’s Tasca Suede Lace-Up Wedge Boots ($92.68) for good measure.

While we love Sasha’s penchant for layering, we also love the low-key looks she puts together for lighter weather. For example, Sasha was spotted at Milan Fashion Week in an unfussy gray maxi dress, jeweled ballet flats, and red lipstick—all in all, an ensemble that is easy, effortless and super-accessible. To replicate Sasha’s ultra-cool look, try a body-clinging maxi dress like Splendid’s Cotton Racer-Back Maxi Dress ($125) or Topshop’s Laddered Jersey Maxi Dress ($60). Then, simply add a pair of Guess’s Emphasis Embellished Satin Ballet Flats ($89) and a dash of Lancome’s L’Absolu Rouge ($29) in Absolute Rouge—you’ll be turning heads in no time.

While Sasha’s style isn’t easily summed up, one thing is certain: you can usually count on a unique mishmash of colors, fabrics and textures, such as this playful combination—floral leggings, biker boots, and leather jacket—which Sasha was spotted wearing in Milan. In this outfit, Sasha’s edgy, rock & roll-side comes out to play, but is tempered slightly with the addition of a feminine floral print—overall, it’s a unique mix that totally works. To assemble an equally stylish ensemble, layer Fossil’s Maribelle Leather Bomber ($198) and J Crew’s Perfect-Fit Long-Sleeve Crewneck Tee ($24.50) over a pair of Topshop’s Floral Cord Skinny Trousers ($90). Accessorize with Calvin Klein’s Lightweight Lurex Scarf ($19.99) and Jeffrey Campbell’s Harness Harley Boots ($268), and you’ll have a look that is perfect for shopping, partying, and playing.

For our final dose of inspiration, we must draw your attention to this perfectly put together party outfit. Namely, leather shorts, a boyfriend blazer, and patent ankle boots, which Sasha was snapped in last year. Of course, an all-black ensemble is a signature supermodel look and for good reason: it is chic, timeless and has plenty of panache! For a similarly stylish look, start with a pair of leather shorts, such as Halston Heritage’s Leather Hot Pants ($345) or Blank Denim’s Leather Shorts ($98). Layer your chosen pair under Topshop’s Ruched Sleeve Blazer ($125) and J Crew’s Asymmetrical Ruffle Tee ($14.99), and then throw on Stella McCartney’s Faux Patent Ankle Boots ($236).
